How to prepare for anal

Educate yourself

As with anything, if you’re new to anal sex, it’s important that you know what to expect; arming yourself with the right facts is half of the battle. Luckily, if you’re reading this article, that means you’re on the right track already!

Knowing what might happen and having realistic expectations is really useful.

If you’re the giver, it will help you make things easier for your partner, and if you’re the receiver, it’s useful to go in with a good idea of what’s going to happen and how to communicate your needs with your partner.

Get used to the new sensations in your own time

When it comes to anal sex, it’s very important to take small steps.

You can’t go straight from never having had anything in your butt ever to full-blown anal penetration with a penis or strap-on. It rarely works and might even put you off trying again!

Get used to things without the pressure of being with a partner.

Take some time to yourself and use your fingers or small toys to get used to the feeling at your own pace.

Try toys (make sure they’re anal safe)

As we mentioned briefly above, toys are a great way to get used to the feeling of having things in your butt, and can also be fun for foreplay!

Things like anal beads can be great to start off with as a “warm-up act”, before working up to butt plugs of size you’re comfortable with.

Just make sure any toys you use for anal play are ‘anal-safe’. This essentially means they are flared at the bottom so they can’t get sucked up and stuck (yes, this can happen!)

Because there’s nothing more unsexy than ending up in the ER with a dildo stuck up your butt.

Lube up

When it comes to any kind of anal play – especially full-on penetrative sex – lube is absolutely essential whether you’re a beginner or a regular in the world of butt stuff.

The more lube the better – you really can’t overdo it here, and it will make things much easier and more pleasurable for both parties!

The rectum is not naturally lubricating like the vagina, so it’s important to provide manual lubrication to avoid unnecessary pain or tearing. We recommend you to read ”The best lubes for anal” post we wrote. Although regular lubes would do the trick, you have to know there is a difference between regular and anal lubes.

Anal lubes are thicker and more opaque, meaning that you’ll see better where you apply it and since it is thicker, it won’t drip away as easily.

If you’re using a condom, make sure your lube is water-based to avoid breaking down the silicone!

Communication is key

First of all, save anal for a partner who you’re totally comfortable with.

It can be messy, a little embarrassing, and potentially uncomfortable. It can also be great, but you have to be with someone who you can trust in either circumstance.

Talk about your worries, your boundaries, and what you need from each other. During anal, keep that dialogue open, and don’t be afraid to speak out if something feels off.

Equally, make sure to stay in tune with your partner and their needs throughout, too.

Before you go

As with anything new, the key when trying anal sex for the first time is not to go into it blind.

Know what to expect, get yourself prepared mentally and physically, and don’t feel the need to strive for perfection. Anal can be incredibly pleasurable and is an exciting part of many couples’ sex lives.

Don’t rush into it, talk it through, and don’t forget to enjoy yourself!
