Read a lovely guest post by our friends from Hot Cherry.

A 2014 overview of sales data from a large online sex toy retailer revealed how 65% of their female dildo customers were single. It also said that 54% of the same female customers were in committed relationships, so… welcome to the world of 119% totals in statistics. Ah! The internet!  Even though it might be erroneous data, or an overlooked typo, the numbers do check out for product type use/purchases. It might also raise questions about user data/privacy, but that’s another story. Maybe I’m paranoid. 65 plus 54 equals 100, right?

Collaborations & fave brands

18% of their one million sales surveyed were, drum roll please…… Vibrators! Out of over 5000 products and one million total sales, that’s 180000 vibrators. Almost 20%, that’s a fifth, even in a 100 = 119 universe. Not bad going and it shows us several things:

  • Unchecked data gets published way too often
  • Single women buy vibrators almost as much as women in relationships
  • Math really doesn’t need to serve you when you leave school and become a millionaire vibrator seller online
  • Women buy a lot of vibrators!

So we know who buys them (we think), but what types do they buy and why?

This is such a vast wilderness of detail, due to the incredible varieties of vibrators available. So, it’s a lot easier to go by the five biggest pros and cons of vibrators reported by women buyers in each of the 65 or 54 percentage categories. The third biggest con given by customers was that their purchased vibrator was ‘too small.’

Keep in mind, this data is five years old, the internet has changed a lot in that time, as has online shopping. Almost every web store has the dimensions of products, and the images today are second to none, but it goes to show that (statistically), until you have it home and in your hot little hand, and maybe also how you’re feeling that day, your most recent purchase is either a fencepost, or maybe it’s a toothpick. My own internal lust valve has been splintered by recent math trauma, but I always opt for smaller is better. I’m not a huge fan of huge, but totally get that some gals like it big, or maybe just slightly bigger than average, and whatever that may be for each person is a matter of personal experience and preference.

Vedo small vibrator

Seriously though, 65 plus 54 is a hundred? I can’t even…

With the top con and pro being nothing/everything respectively, and the smell being fourth after too small, it’s safe to say that size and smell have an impact on female choices in blind buys regarding vibrators, generally speaking. Even though they might be too small, or even too big, we’ll make do, and most likely find a use for them, right girls? Guys too, who, by the way, purchase more sex toys than women, and also buy bigger, longer dildos than women, and the majority are heterosexual men. Who knew?

Aside from smell, is a vibrator that’s ‘too small’ really all that bad? My top 5, plus features for un-smelly small vibrators in general:

  1. A small vibrator is compact and discreet, you can take it anywhere with you, and most are waterproof and so quiet these days; it’s like having a magic pen, that’s actually a magic pen. Can I borrow your pen? Ah, I’ll just be a minute.
  2. They’re a one-way ticket to perfect, clitoral-induced orgasms, and as fast or slow as you like. Laser-targeted action from my small vibrator will ‘ring the bell’ way quicker and better!
  3. Bedside and nighttime relief. The best sleeping pill isn’t a foot long, or even a six inch. A quick and easy to use (especially in the dark/half asleep) helper that doesn’t talk or ask questions, need feeding or emotional security etc. is perfect. All the better if they’re just a few inches long, and don’t wake up the neighbors or household. Ummmm, yep!
  4. Travel and sleepovers made easy. Flying a lot, I don’t recommend taking your favorite toy, unless you really have no problems with ‘Buck’ or ‘The Master’ poking his head out at airport security. A small vibrator is great in with your wet pack and looks/scans like a toothbrush. Great advice! Thank me later…
  5. Small vibrators can be easier to go other places, and are just easier, and generally last longer, are easier to clean, store, and well, I just prefer them. My first vibe was a mini, maybe that’s it, but it always makes it feel special when I use it like it was that first time.

Black magic bullet vibrator kit

Whichever style, size or shape of vibrator, or any sex toys for beginner you choose to use, what matters most is how it makes you feel. How it works for you. The popularity of sex toys in general is at the height of its acceptance, with many people freely discussing types, sizes and preferences like we do with anything else, guys included. So, if you’ve found your ‘knight’ or ‘heroine’ in shining silicone, well done, it’s great, isn’t it!? If you’re still on the fence, or looking for a great first time vibrator, don’t cancel out the small vibrator from your checklist because, much like the pen, they are often mightier than the sword.
