Being restrained — or doing the restraining — is one of the most popular BDSM fantasies for good reason. Handing over (or taking) physical control is intense in the best way. And it’s genuinely safe when you follow a few rules. This guide is part of the BDSM for Beginners series; for gear choices, pair it with Cuffs vs Rope vs Tape vs Under-Bed Restraints.

The golden rules of safe bondage

Learn these before you tie anything:

  1. Never leave a bound person alone. Not for a second. Stay in the room, stay attentive.
  2. Keep safety scissors within reach. Blunt-nosed EMT shears can cut through rope or tape instantly if something goes wrong. Non-negotiable.
  3. Two-finger rule. You should be able to slide two fingers under any binding. Tighter than that risks circulation.
  4. Watch hands and feet. Cold, pale, blue, tingling or numb = release now. Numbness and pins-and-needles mean a nerve is being compressed.
  5. Never tie around the neck. No exceptions for beginners. The neck is off-limits.
  6. Avoid joints and load-bearing. Don’t bind directly over joints, and never suspend body weight from a binding.
  7. Agree a non-verbal safeword. If hands are tied, dropping an object or three taps works. See safewords.

Safe beginner positions

Start with positions that are comfortable, easy to exit, and don’t strain anything:

  • Wrists in front, lying down. The simplest start. Bind the wrists loosely and let them rest on the belly or above the head on a pillow.
  • Wrists to a bed frame / under-bed straps. Spread-eagle on the back is comfy and gives great access. Under-bed restraint systems make this effortless.
  • Hands behind the back, seated or kneeling. Great for a submissive position — but keep it short, as shoulders tire.

Avoid, for now: hogties, anything face-down that restricts breathing, standing suspension, and complex rope harnesses. Those are for later, with training.

What to tie with

You don’t need fancy gear to start:

Avoid thin cord, zip ties, or anything that bites into the skin and can’t be released fast.

Ideas to recreate

  • The helpless tease. Bind wrists to the headboard, blindfold them (blindfold play), and run a slow sensation session.
  • Bound and spanked. Wrists behind the back, then a warm-up spanking — the loss of control heightens every swat.
  • The waiting game. Loosely restrain, then leave them anticipating (while staying right there) before you begin.
