Anal play is great for all genders! Whether you stimulate the prostate, the G-spot, or just enjoy anal penetration anal sex can be fun. Exploring anal play can be a bit scary and people have lots of questions when they begin. Here is a guide to exploring anal play and a list of the 7 best prostate toys I shoved up my butt this year.

What is the prostate?

The prostate has been compared to the female G-spot. It can be accessed by inserting a finger into your rectum about three inches and pressing upward toward the belly button. It is a body part that exists for people assigned male at birth.

For most people, sticking something up their bum for pleasure is initially a scary prospect. You may worry that it will hurt, that there will be poop, or that this will somehow magically turn you gay. I am happy to say that it can be quite pleasurable, poo-free, and will not alter your sexual orientation in any way. What prostate play will do is introduce you to a new world of pleasure!

Click here to see a diagram indicating the prostate and other key body parts.

The prostate is a walnut-sized gland between the bladder and the penis. The urethra runs through it, allowing urine to pass. During ejaculation, the prostate secretes fluid to protect the sperm and comes out of the urethra which comes out as seminal fluid.

You can feel the prostate through the wall of the rectum. For most people the prostate can be felt about three inches inside the rectum when you push your finger up toward your stomach. It will feel a bit firmer or rubber-like than the surrounding materials.

The prostate is surrounded by nerve bundles. When these nerves are stimulated with a toy or fingers, it is extremely pleasurable. Stimulating the prostate with vibrations, stroking motions, or pressing motions can increase the intensity and enjoyment of an orgasm.

What if I don’t have a prostate?

Butt toys are enjoyable for everyone of any gender.

While the prostate is the key part most people with one like to stimulate, anal play can be pleasurable for everyone. People enjoy anal play for a variety of reasons: the feeling of fullness, the stimulation of the prostate or G-Spot through the anal wall, the stimulation of the exterior part of the anus which is filled with nerve endings, and the power dynamics some people involved in it.

If you don’t have a prostate but want to try anal play, the same rules apply. Make sure you go slow, use lots of lube, start small, and listen to your body.

Isn’t poop a problem?

One of the most common concerns about people who have not tried prostate play is running into poop. Luckily, there is a very easy solution to limit the amount of feces you encounter when enjoying anal play.

Eat a diet high in fiber

High-fiber diets and adding fiber supplements to your diet help bind the feces as it travels through your body. This means you will have solid, well-formed poop. Eating a high-fiber diet a day or two before any bum play will make fully eliminating feces before play much easier. Make sure you have had a full bowel movement before play and cleaned the external area well. Using a bidet or wet wipe to clean the external area will prepare your bum for clean, fun play.

Invest in an anal douche

Anal douching is not the same thing as an enema. Enemas are designed to clear out over a foot of area including the rectum and lower colon. Most enemas come with some medications or supplements beyond just water. You do not need an enema for prostate play.

An anal douche, sometimes called an anal shower, is a tool comprised of a bulb to hold water and an insertable piece. To properly douche, fill up the bulb with warm- not hot – water. Put lube on the insertable piece. Stand with one foot on the rim of the toilet or your bathtub and insert the douche. Squeeze in the water gently. Hold it for a minute and then defecate. Repeat this process until the water runs clean. This will clear out about eight inches of space and make for a poo-free play time.

When you have clear water running out from you, gently clean the area with a bidet or wipe. Make sure to clean the douche before storing it!

Barriers

If you are still concerned about running into a bit of poop, using a condom on your toys and nitrile gloves on your hands is a great option. Remember, even though condoms and gloves provide a smooth surface, make sure to add lubricant before inserting them into your bum.

Will prostate play hurt?

When you start to explore anal play, there are a few key rules to follow.

  • Start small.
  • Go slow.
  • Use lots of lube!

The bum begins with the anal verge (part just outside of the butthole) followed by the entry which is controlled by a couple of sphincter muscles. These muscles are what hold your bum hole tight and prevent stuff from leaking out as you move around. These muscles normally relax when you sit down to defecate.

For any type of anal play, you will need to train these muscles to relax and accept a finger, a toy, or a penis. This relaxation can take time to teach yourself and get used too it. The best way to start this training is to invest in an anal trainer set.

An anal trainer kit comes with different size butt plugs. Some also come with an anal douche and lube shooter. The B-Vibe Anal Training Kit is a great starter kit because it comes with all the things you need to get started (except lube).

Start by lubricating the smallest butt toy you have. Most people want to start with something about the size of a finger. Insert the lubricated toy into your bum. Go slowly and don’t force it in! If you experience a lot of resistance, relax and breathe. Gently pulse the toy in place to get your muscles to start to relax. When they relax a bit, push the toy in a further. Continue this until the toy is all the way inside of you. This may not happen on the first attempt.

Wear the smallest plug for 5 minutes. Increase the time to 10 or 15 minutes over training sessions. When you can comfortably insert the smallest toy, move to the next size up. Over time, your bum will relax to continue to take wider and longer toys.

Always listen to your body. If a toy hurts or feels like it is too big, remove it and return to training with a smaller size.

Toy materials

Butt toys are made out of a variety of materials. Some are safe to put in your bum while others are not. Understanding the pro’s and con’s of each material will help you in selecting your plug.

Silicone

Body-safe silicone is a great option for butt toys. It is a microporous material. The pores are so small, bacteria and other infectious materials cannot fit. Body-safe silicone can be fully sterilized with hot water or soap and water. It has a bit of give to it making it a comfortable choice.

Borosilicate glass

Borosilicate glass is a special type of glass which is incredibly durable and very hard to break. This material has no give. Use a smaller than usual toy if you are new to glass toys. The firm material will make it feel larger inside you than it looks! Like silicone, this can be fully sterilized.

Metal

Metal is similar to glass in that it is non-porous, easy to sterilize, and very durable. Like borosilicate glass, the firmness of these toys makes them feel much larger than they appear. Additionally, the metal toys come in a wide range of designs and are very pretty.

Wood and stone/crystal

Stone, crystal, and wood toys are becoming increasingly popular. These toys are not able to be fully sterilized. If you buy one of these toys, make sure it is for one user. Sharing toys of these materials runs the risk of transmitting some infectious materials between users. These toys are very pretty to look at and will appeal to various users.

Jelly & cyberskin

Jelly and Cyberskin toys are not recommended for anal use. Cheaper toys are often made of a jelly material. This material can leach chemicals and cause harm to the body. Cyberskin feels much more like actual flesh. However, the inability to fully sterilize it makes it an undesirable toy for butt play.

Prostate play safety

Your butt can become quite greedy as you relax and start to enjoy play. The muscles will draw in more of the toy as your body enjoys play. For an anal toy to be safe, the base needs to be significantly larger than the widest insertable part. New standards require that items marketed to go in your bum meet basic safety standards. However, the items which do not meet this requirement will take time to disappear off Amazon and other sites. Also, toys labeled as “novelty” items do not have to meet these safety standards.

Buying from a reputable sex toy vendor and avoiding “sell everything” sites like EBay and Amazon is a great way to avoid dangerous toys.

This plug offers pre=programed vibration patterns as well as the ability to manually control the vibration speeds and intensity in both motors. For people who have been enjoying anal play for a while, the Nuo is a great way to up your butt game.

Don’t Forget the Lube!

The most important part of anal play is to remember the lubricant. Anal play without any form of lube is often painful and the probability of tearing or injuring the anus is greatly increased. Choosing the right lube for anal play is important.

Types of Lubricants

There are three main classes of lubricants: water, hybrid, and silicone-based. Each lube type has its own pros and cons.

Water-Based

A majority of lubricants are water-based lubes. These lubricants are safe for all genital areas. They often are limited in the number of allergens and chemicals users want to avoid. The drawback of many of these water-based lubes for anal play is that they break down faster than hybrid or silicone lubes.

Good Clean Love Almost Naked Lubricant is a great option for anal play. Good Clean Love products are made out of natural ingredients such as agar and aloe to increase the slickness people feel. They have a limited number of ingredients. Most will work for people with allergies. Additionally, Good Clean Love products have no or very light scents. This one is a bit citrusy on the nose, which is quite pleasant.

Hybrid

Hybrid lubricants combine water and other ingredients (silicone, oil) to make a slick product. These lubricants last longer and often feel slicker than water-based lubes. However, the increase in ingredients means there is a chance you or a partner might have a negative reaction to the product.

If you are using a new hybrid lube, doing an allergy test is useful. Put a small bit of lubricant on the inside of your wrist and let it sit for a few hours. If you do not develop itching or a rash, you should be good to go!

For anal sex, some lubricants include numbing or relaxing compounds to make sex more enjoyable. Privy Peach CBD Coco Jambo lubricant is a great option for anal sex. This lube contains CBD, the non-psychoactive part of marijuana which is connected to relaxation and pain reduction. The CBD in this lube will help your anal muscles relax and increase the pleasure you experience during sex.

Silicone-Based Lubes

Many lubricants designed for anal sex have a silicone base. Silicone lubricants last longer and remain slicker than other lubes, making them a great choice for anal play. Silicone lubes are safe to use in the anus. Avoid getting them in the vagina to prevent vaginal irritation.

Lubricants like Gunn Oil are silicone-based and can help people who find water or hybrid lubricants dry too quickly during anal play.

Are these toys really the best prostate toys?

We’re all different and while I can not guarantee these toys will work for you as they work for me, I’m pretty sure that trying them out and playing alone or with your partner is going to be an enjoyable and pleasurable process.
