“Am I dominant or submissive?” is one of the first questions people ask when they get curious about BDSM — and the honest answer is: you get to find out by trying, not by taking a quiz. Roles are hats, not tattoos. This guide helps you explore yours without pressure. It’s part of the BDSM for Beginners series.

The three broad roles

  • Dominant (Dom / Domme / Top): enjoys leading, directing and controlling the scene — and carries responsibility for their partner’s safety and wellbeing.
  • Submissive (sub / bottom): enjoys following, surrendering and receiving — handing control to someone they trust.
  • Switch: enjoys both, depending on mood, partner and the day. Switches are extremely common, so if nothing feels fixed, that’s normal.

There’s also a distinction between Dominant/submissive (who holds the power) and Top/bottom (who does vs receives the physical action). Often they line up; sometimes they don’t. Don’t overthink the vocabulary yet.

Questions to explore (not a test)

Sit with these honestly — ideally journal a few:

  • In fantasies, are you more often doing something to someone, or having it done to you?
  • Does the idea of being told exactly what to do feel like relief, or like a cage?
  • Does taking charge and being responsible for someone’s pleasure excite you, or stress you?
  • Do you crave structure and rules, or the power to set them?
  • What feels hotter: earning praise, or giving it?

There are no right answers, and your answers can differ by partner and by day.

Signs you might lean Dominant

  • You love planning, anticipating a partner’s needs, and being “in charge.”
  • Praising, guiding or gently “punishing” a partner turns you on.
  • You feel most present when you’re responsible for the experience.

Signs you might lean submissive

  • The idea of letting go and not deciding feels freeing.
  • You’re drawn to serving, pleasing, or being “used” (consensually).
  • Praise, rules and structure feel comforting rather than confining.

Signs you might be a switch

  • You want both — sometimes to lead, sometimes to follow.
  • Your role flips depending on partner or mood.
  • You find the “which am I?” question genuinely hard because the answer is “yes.”

Switching is a role in its own right, not indecision.

How to actually find out: try it

Reading only gets you so far. Agree a low-stakes experiment with a partner: run a short first scene in one role, then swap another night. Debrief honestly afterwards (see negotiation). Your body will tell you more in ten minutes of play than a week of overthinking.
