I have a large box under my bed full of my favorite vibrators, butt plugs, dildos, and other naughty toys. I love using my gadgets to achieve toe-curling orgasms, but I recently heard something about sex toys that set me on edge.

Two girls nearby were chatting, not about intensity levels or the best positions. Instead, they were worrying about the safety of their sexual devices, asking, “Could your sex toy be spying on you?”

I’m not one for eavesdropping, but I couldn’t help but hear their convo, and it left me feeling puzzled. My sex toys are safely stowed, and when I do get one out for play, I never feel paranoid that my buzzy friend is secretly snooping on me while I pleasure my pussy lips or caress my clit.

I decided to investigate further and asked a few of my friends if they had heard anything about sex toy spies, and to my surprise, one of them had.

Jo is a tech-savvy girl; she not only works in IT, she also builds computers and tinkers with processors in her spare time. She took great delight in meeting me for a glass of vino to discuss snooping sex toys.

Jo also gave me the backstory on cybersecurity and explained why some people are so worried their sex toys are spying on them.

Smart sex toys and cybersecurity

Keen to open the door on her world, Jo kicked things off by talking about the Internet of Things. I’ve heard the phrase before, but she was clearly on a roll, so I nodded my head politely as she explained that there had been an increase in the number of products with internet capability.

Jo enthusiastically informed me that you can connect all sorts of products to the internet, including fridges, lights, watches, door locks, and sex toys.  These smart gadgets are designed to help us, enlighten us, and entertain us, and most of us own one or more.

Despite their usefulness, some people are concerned about the intrusiveness of smart gadgets, and cybersecurity issues have led us to question whether our devices are open to misuse.

Are sex toy apps spying on us?

With technology moving at a speedy pace, sex toys are more advanced than ever. Companies are offering easy-to-download apps that connect with sex toys for a more thrilling experience. The app syncs with your toy so you can control the settings, etc, at the touch of a button.

common privacy risks

You can get your partner involved too by handing over the app so they can take command. If you’re in a long-distance relationship or your partner is away for a while, a sex toy with a connected app can be a great way to keep your sex life alive.

My lover worked away for a month recently, and it was a real turn-on planning steamy post-work sex sessions. We set up video calls, and I relished letting him control my vibrator as I held it against my pussy.

Collaborations & fave brands

Despite the fun the connected apps can deliver, concerns have been voiced, too. There have been stories in the press about snooping sex toys, and people have been pointing accusatory fingers at connected apps.

Some companies collected data via the app, under the premise of needing the information for market research. Data harvested included details on usage and settings.

Spying sex toy apps exposed

When consumers discovered their data was being harvested, they were understandably peeved. Two hackers broke the news, letting everyone know that the data could be seized by others.

Worse still, they alleged others could use the data to take over command of the toys. It’s one thing to give power over your sex toy to your lover, but the idea of having the power taken by a stranger is a different story.

Understandably, when users found out some got uppity about having their privacy violated. They were concerned that the company had personal information such as email addresses, and that this could be coupled with the data gathered.

Disgruntled customers filed lawsuits, payouts were made, and lessons were learnt. With security upgraded, companies promised to uphold customers’ safety and protect data.

Am I at risk from sex toy spying?

Of course, I had heard of people hacking their way into mobiles and laptops, but I had no clue that I might be at risk from sex toy hackers. The thought of someone hijacking my vibrator sets me on edge.

Smart sex toys safety tips

I don’t like the idea that some crazy hacker can access my info or turn my device on me to wreak mental and physical chaos.

The future of sexnologies

Put the words sex and technologies together, and you come up with sexnologies, and whilst I’m excited to see where high-tech advances will take us, I’m also a little worried.

Jo told me too many dodgy stories about connectivity problems and issues relating to a lack of encryption. I don’t pretend to be an expert, but I do know that if your connection is not encrypted, you could be leaving the door open for cyberattacks and misuse.

I do not want my personal information on hand for people to see. I’m worried that connecting a sex toy to an app could allow access to all sorts of data, including names, genders, orientations, and even photographs.

There’s also a worry about malicious attacks from sadistic hackers. What if one manages to hack into my connection and turn my gently vibrating bullet into a pulsating pussy penetrator?

My sex toy might be spying on me, but I’m going to use it anyway

Despite my fears, I’ve decided to carry on using my favorite sex toys. I enjoy using them and I’m not prepared to disconnect right now; I like the buzz too much!

That said, I’ll keep an eye out for more information, and if I discover my sex toy has gone rogue, I’ll lock it in my toy chest and throw away the key.
