In writing up our toy guides, our ultimate aim is to help you find the perfect sexy companion for you and/or your partner. If this isn’t something you’re so used to – we get it – it can be daunting.

Believe it or not, it was once daunting to us, too (ok, you probably don’t believe that).

As with anything else in life, when you’re forking out your hard-earned cash, you want to make an informed decision. Luckily, we’ve done the research, so you don’t have to!

Today, we’re going to go over the basics of what we consider when looking for a new toy. Before diving in head-first, it’s always good to have an idea of what you’re after.

Collaborations & fave brands

But why exactly should you trust us?

It’s a fair question…what can we offer and where does our expertise come from?

To put it quite simply, EXPERIENCE. We’re toy enthusiasts and have researched a huge range of products from all of the top retailers, including Lovehoney, Betty’s Toy Box, Adam and Eve, Stockroom and good old Amazon.

We pick out the toys we review carefully, taking inspiration from other specialist sex toy guides, as well as top picks from mainstream websites and magazines like Marie Claire, Cosmopolitan, and Women’s Health. Of course, we also love to see what our sex blogger colleagues are going crazy for.

Essentially, we’re not sex toy scientists (is that even a thing?), but we have a hell of a lot of experience under our belts. And through our hours and hours of research, we’ve certainly learned a thing or two on how to make an informed decision.

The Top 5 things we look for in a sex toy

Material

It probably goes without saying that anything that’s going to be touching your body this intimately should be made from body-safe materials. Things like silicone, glass, metal or ABS plastic that are non-porous and easy to clean are ideal. When researching and trying out toys, we always keep an eye out for latex, too, as many people are allergic or sensitive to it!

Battery life

Obviously, this only applies to toys that vibrate or do something requiring a battery! Anyone who has experienced their vibrator running out during a long awaited masturbaterthon will tell you that power is key. For this reason, we will always point you guys to toys that are either rechargeable or have a great battery life.

Size

Let’s be honest, when looking for a dildo or G-spot vibrator it’s tempting to think that bigger = better. Although this may be true, it’s important to be realistic and not dive right in at the deep end (no pun intended). For example, if you are looking for your first toy, opting for a 12-inch vibrating G-spot dildo might not be the wisest choice (I mean, if you’re feeling brave, go for it!)

Quality

Although there are some great affordable toys, lubes etc. out there, quality should always be a priority. After all, you’re going to get to know whatever you buy *pretty* well. Hell, it might even be going inside your body, so ensuring it’s safe, sturdy, ergonomic and easy-to-use is a must.

Specialist considerations

Depending on what exactly you’re looking to buy, there will be some product-specific things to think about. For example, if we’re looking at a butt plug, we will make sure it’s anal-safe with a flared base before investing (yes, they CAN get lost!) Alternatively, if we’re on the hunt for the perfect vibrator, we always take a look at the reviews to find out how strong the vibrations are.

Doing the right research is SO important when hunting out the perfect toy for you or your partner, and we’re here to help you along the way with our comprehensive reviews, recommendations, and guides – so keep your eyes peeled for more!
