We’re all about having fun with sex toys, but whether you’re an experienced toy enthusiast or joining the party for the first time, it’s important to be aware of how to clean up properly!

Want to turn ordinary into extraordinary? 👇

As with anything in the bedroom, hygiene and safety are key.

Taking care of your toys will not only make using them all the more enjoyable, but it will keep you safe and your toys long-lasting.

Cleaning a sex toy

Though it’s important to follow the specific instructions for your toy, these are our general top tips for cleaning your sex toys *right*.

How to clean your sex toys?

Use protection

Yep, even with toys!

Of course, using a condom with your toys is totally up to you, and if it’s only you/yourself and a partner using it you might decide this isn’t necessary.

But, if you’re using a toy with multiple partners or for casual sex, it might be wise to opt to use a condom to prevent any potential transmission of bacteria or sexually transmitted infections.

Clean up straight after use

We get it, it’s probably the last thing you want to do right now – but cleaning your toy or toys straight away can prevent the build-up of bacteria.

This step is particularly crucial if you’re using porous toys, as these are more at risk of becoming victims of germs.

Which leads us onto the next point…be aware of the material

Sex toys come in a diverse variety of shapes, sizes, forms and – you guessed it – materials

Before diving in and cleaning your toy, it’s important to be aware of its material to avoid damage.

Many toys, particularly the more affordable and popular ones are made from porous silicone, but make sure to check before diving in with your cleaning routine!

Use a mild, unscented soap

For most materials, opting to wipe your toys down with a soapy, damp washcloth is the simplest and most effective cleaning method.

Be aware of the soap you’re using, however – keep it as gentle as possible to avoid fragrance or harsh chemicals transferring onto the toy (and eventually, your body).

If it vibrates, don’t get it too wet

If your toy is battery-powered or rechargeable and non-waterproof, stick to using a damp cloth and make sure you don’t get too much water on it.

Enough to get it fully clean, yes, but the last thing you want is to mess up those beloved vibrations!

Make sure it’s fully dry

Use a clean towel to ensure your toy is completely dry before putting it away – dampness is a sure-fire recipe for bacterial growth.

Store it safely

Once your toy is all cleaned up, fresh, and dry, be sure to store it in a sealable container or bag to provide an extra barrier against dirt or germs (because let’s admit it, we don’t clean our bedroom drawers all that often).

A regular plastic container is absolutely fine, but if you want to be a little extra, you could invest in a satin bag for your toy or in a storage system if you have a bigger collection.

Buy a sex toy cleaner

If you want to keep things as convenient as possible, there are plenty of designated toy cleaners available.

In fact, when you purchase a new toy, stores like Lovehoney often recommend you purchase a toy cleaner or some wipes alongside it.

It’s always preferable to clean your toys properly with soap and water, but having something quick and easy to hand for those occasions when you really can’t be bothered isn’t a bad idea.
